API key guides, step by step

Every dashboard we build pulls data straight from the tools your business already uses: your website analytics, your course platform, your email marketing, your social channels. To make that connection, each tool needs an "API key", a long random password-like string that lets our dashboard fetch your numbers automatically.

If you have never fetched an API key before, that sentence might as well be a different language. That is exactly why these guides exist. First, what is an API?

API stands for "application programming interface". In plain English: it is a way for two pieces of software to talk to each other automatically, without a human clicking around in the middle.

Think of it like a restaurant. You (the customer) do not walk into the kitchen and grab your own food. You give your order to the waiter, the waiter takes it to the kitchen, the kitchen cooks it and the waiter brings the food back to you. The waiter is the "interface" between you and the kitchen, translating in both directions.

Software works the same way. One piece of software asks for something (send me last month's visitor numbers), the API carries that request across, and the other software sends back the answer. No human needs to log in, click six menus, and copy the numbers into an email.
